IPCC'S Reality Check, a short video.

I just stumbled onto a "new version" of an IPCC video, it's an introduction to the Fifth Assessment Report of the IPCC's "Physical Science Basis" Working Group. Since I'm only its forth viewer, I figured I should share it. {OK, it's just because it fits in so well with my current "reality check" theme, that I'm posting it.  Along with some short time-signatured notes.}

0:00 - IPCC - "The scientific evidence is stronger than ever.  Better and more observations, improved understanding of the climate system response, further development of climate models, all point in the same direction."

"Human influence on the climate system is clear."

Continue for a time signature outline of this video

1:14 - {back to english} Thomas Stocker: "We have looked at all the evidence, that tell us how the climate has changed in the past and presently, took that evidence to ask ourselves how we understand the climate system, what the caused of these changes are, and then take that knowledge and climate simulation to ask ourselves, what possible futures are there."

1:40 -  "Many of these observed changes are unusual or unprecedented on time scales of decades to millennia"
Speed of changes being witnessed.

1:50 - ice cores . . .

1:55 - review of paleoclimate record and current observations

2:05 - Atmosphere - "Each of the last three decades has been warmer than all preceding decades since 1850 {instrumental tracking, and the industrial revolution} with first decade of 21st century has been the warmest."

2:25 - Dennis L. Hartmann discusses AR5 (the fifth IPCC climate assessment report)
" we were able to demonstrate that atmospheric CO2 has increased 40% since industrial times, mostly as a result of human activities and that level of CO2 in the atmospheric are higher than they have been for the 800,000 years of Earth history."

2:55 - Cryosphere - "The effects are most evident in some of the coldest places on the planet, ice sheets and glaciers world wide are losing mass, permafrost is thawing, and the snow and sea ice cover in the arctic is decreasing."

3:10 - Josefino C. Comiso - "We are getting a lot of signals from the cryosphere in terms of warming. . ."

3:25 - Graphing Arctic Sea Ice decrease since 1980...

3:35 - Greenland glaciers decreasing, graphic observation based visualization of Greenland glacier flows.  {Melt rate has increased six fold from a decade ago!}

cascading consequences...

4:00 - Oceans -

4:10 - "Based on multiple lines of independent evidence it's now virtually certain that the ocean is warming..."

4:20 - Monika Rhein - ocean warming will continue ...

4:40 - Four major contributors to Sea Level Rise (SLR)
     Ocean heat uptake causes expansion
     Melting of glaciers
     Reduction of ice sheets
     Changes in water storage on land

4:50 - improvements in observations and understanding have resulted in a consistent sea level budget assessment

4:55 - John A. Church - "Over the 20th century as a whole, the dominant contributions are ocean thermo-expansion, and the contribution from the loss of mass of s glaciers. ... We will have to adapt to sea level rise."

5:20 - "Our understanding of climate system relies on combining observations and studies from many different scientific disciplines.  With the help of super-computers, this knowledge can provide climate projections for the future."

5:40 - Reto Knutti - "Climate models provide an absolutely crucial role in this assessment report, they are the only tools that allow us to say something quantitative about the future."

6:00 - Knutti gives quick overview of development of climate model sophistication.

6:25 - "Climate change projections require information about future emissions or concentrations of greenhouse gases, aerosols, and other anthropogenic drivers."

6:35 - New set of scenarios based on recent data ...

{It is not a choice,
we have a decision to make, and that decision will dictate the future health of our biosphere,
doing nothing is just as much a decision
as deciding the problem is real and needs to be addressed by all who care about the future.}

7:00 - In 2013 the Working Group One establishing an 'atlas' of regional projections ...

7:30 - Three key messages:

     Warming in the climate system is unequivocal (based the observations, we have multiple lines of independent evidence)

     Human influence on the climate system is CLEAR.

     Continued increasing greenhouse gas emissions causes further climate change and constitute a multi-century commitment in the future.  Therefore, we conclude that limiting climate change (that would be global warming) requires substantial and sustained reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.

And then there's this from SkepticalScience.com:

Scientists connect the dots from identifying to preventing dangerous climate risks

Posted on 23 December 2014 by dana1981

Last week, over 20,000 Earth scientists gathered at the annual American Geophysical Union (AGU) fall conference. They shared their scientific research, ranging from identifying the causes of past climate changes, to estimating the risks of the changes we’re causing now, to how we can successfully communicate the need to mitigate those risks. ...

:-) You were the fourth person to see the video with French subtitles.

Here is the one original with more views from last year and helpful English subtitles.

Victor,
Thanks for reminding me about that one.
Thing is the timing on this one was too good not to slide right into this slot, considering my next post will be reentering the realm of that politically motivated crazy-maker Mr. Steele and his hatchet job on serious science.

Thanks for sharing the link to the original.
